Panda Express is an American fast-food restaurant chain that serves Chinese American cuisine. With more than 2,200 locations, it is the largest Asian restaurant chain in the United States, where it was founded, and is mainly located in North America and Asia (in addition to other countries and territories). Panda Express restaurants were traditionally found in shopping mall food courts, but the chain now operates units in many other environments and formats, including independent restaurants, as well as universities, casinos, airports, military bases, amusement parks and other locations. In 1982, Peggy Cherng, Andrew's wife, joined her husband in the restaurant business. In 1983, through their connections with then-UCLA football coach Terry Donahue, the manager of Glendale Galleria invited them to make a fast-food version of Panda Inn for the mall.
Since then, Panda Express has spread across the United States and even has restaurants in Mexico, Canada, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. It's that level of customer service and the popularity of the restaurant that led Glendale Galleria to ask the Cherngs to open a fast-food outlet in its mall, that's how Panda Express was born. Andrew Cherng and his father, Master Chef Ming-Tsai Cherng opened the first Panda Inn in Pasadena, California in 1973. Of course, most of the restaurants you frequent today have computerized systems for taking orders and managing data, but Panda Express was one of the first restaurants to do so, all thanks to Cherng.
